Digging Down versus Jacking Up

From the looks of it, it seems you've decided to go down versus jacking up the house. What was the decision criteria for that? Hopefully the water was a spill or something! :-) Do you find this valuable?

We are still living in the house. Jacking up would have been much more disruptive. Plus, the foundation needed major work; going up would have been structurally unwise. Do you find this valuable?
